(Source)– Losing his left hand in a freak hunting accident turned out to be a positive for chef Eduardo Garcia.
The Portland, Oregon chef was outfitted with a bionic hand and though he’s still learning how to use it while cooking, there are definitely a few advantages.
‘I’ve got superpowers. I can grab things out of an oven and not get burnt,’ he told Good Morning America. ‘I don’t cut my fingers anymore. I’m rocking it!’
Garcia’s transition to super human began two years ago while bow hunting for elk when he unexpectedly got electrocuted.
‘No one plans for that day. It was a crazy time with the company and I was out hunting and came across a bear carcass … when you are outdoors a lot you see this,’ the 32-year-old told Fox News Latino. ‘I pulled my knife – I always carry a knife with me – and stabbed it.’
Little did he know, there was a live wire beneath the bear, which shocked the chef with 2,400 bolts of electricity.
[youtube AUyBHTTQ4ag 560 315]He remembers his heart beating and his eyes staying open, and telling himself to get on his knees.
The next think he remembers was walking a mile away up an old logging road to get help.
He did eventually find help but was in pretty rough shape.
Garcia spent the next 48 days in intensive care, losing four ribs, major muscle groups in his torso and 10 inches of his left arm.
But just five days after getting out of the hospital, he was already back in the kitchen cooking a meal for a group of friends.
‘It took long, but I was doing it,’ he said. ‘It’s doable, and I thought I’d get faster, better.’
Garcia still doesn’t think he’s the same chef as he was before, and doesn’t believe he will ever be as fast but he’s improving all the time.
He’s gotten so used to his new artificial limb that he sometimes forgets they can’t do everything a hand can do.
How cool is Eduardo Garcia? If that was me, I would still be crying about it. 2,400 bolts of electricity… what what what?? I’m not even sure how much that is, but it’s probably slightly more than when I get shocked wearing my slippers on the carpet… and I even jump at that. Chef Eduardo= Real man.
